Do I need to join a political party to register to vote?
No. If you do not want to join a political party, you may “decline to state” a political party. Decline-to-state, or “independent”, voters may be able to participate in a party’s primary election based on California’s modified primary system.
If you choose to join a political party, there are currently six qualified political parties in California:
1. The Democratic Party
2. The American Independent Party
3. The Green Party
4. The Libertarian Party
5. The Peace and Freedom Party
6. The Republican Party
