Why was Coit Tower built?
The Coit Tower was a monument built for the firefighters in San Francisco and named after Lillie Hitchcock Coit. She is said to have been rescued from a severe fire as a child, and at the age of 15 she became a volunteer firefighter with the Knickerbocker Engine Company, and was later dubbed its mascot. She donated a substantial amount of money to the city to build the tower after she died in 1929.
