In Case You Missed It: San Francisco Municipal Transit Authority (SFMTA) recently implemented a handful of service improvements to key Muni bus lines.

Read on for all the details regarding the changes that went into effect this week, which will hopefully have a positive impact on public transit riders across the city.

Shorten your commute with an improved route

10 Townsend and 12 Folsom/Pacific

As first announced by SFMTA last month:

“A new southbound traffic lane on Sansome Street in the Financial District will provide a more direct path for Muni’s 10 Townsend and 12 Folsom/Pacific routes…

“With the Sansome Street Improvement Project, part of Muni Forward, we will extend the street’s southbound lane three blocks north, from Washington Street to Broadway. Like the southbound lane segment that already exists on Sansome south of Washington, the extended lane will only be for transit and commercial vehicles during daytime hours.”

Muni buses began utilizing the new lane on Saturday, August 13. SFMTA predicts that “with this new, direct route, riders on the 10 and 12 will save up to three minutes per outbound trip.”

As a result of the lane extension, outbound 10 and 12 buses will now make two additional stops heading southbound on Sansome Street:

  • Broadway and Sansome Street (near side)
  • Sansome and Jackson streets

While these lines will no longer run along Battery Street, riders should note that the existing stops at Broadway and at Jackson will remain in service for the 82X Levi Plaza Express line.

Larger buses cut down on crowding

5R Fulton Rapid

On Monday, August 15, SFMTA began utilizing 60-foot articulated trolleys along some runs of the 5R Fulton Rapid route, which should give passengers a little more elbow room.

Not sure what a “60-foot articulated trolley” is? Don’t worry – we’ve got you covered!

Ch-ch-changes to transit stops

19 Polk

The outbound stop of the 19 Polk line near Donahue Street and Innes Avenue in Hunter’s Point, which had been relocated as a result of construction, has now returned to the far side of the intersection.

35 Eureka

A new stop in each direction has been added to the 35 Eureka route near Glen Park on Miguel Street at Laidley Street.

43 Masonic

If you’re a regular rider of the 43 Masonic line, listen up! The bus stops on Masonic Avenue at Golden Gate Avenue have been removed traveling in both directions.

55 16th Street

Good news for Kaiser patients and employees! A new stop has been added in each direction to the 55 16th Street line at Owens Street to service the Mission Bay medical offices.

So long, summer

It might not feel like summer in San Francisco until September and October roll around. But, now that students of all ages are heading back to school, SFMTA has restored the pre-summer schedule for the following lines:
