Uber Releases Plans for New Headquarters
New Campus Will Be in San Francisco's Mission Bay
Uber released plans on May 27th for its new headquarters, which will be located in Mission Bay. The 423,000 square-foot building complexes will be able to house about 3,000 workers, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Construction is set to begin later this year.
Uber announced its plans for the new headquarters last fall, but this is the first time the public is seeing the designs. The early renderings of the two building complex include an 11-story mid-rise building at 1455 Third St. and a six-story building at 1515 Third St. Uber currently leases offices on Market St., but is outgrowing the space. Once construction is complete, employees will move to the new headquarters.
The design details were released as part of the “request for qualification” process. The new campus, designed by New York based SHoP Architects, includes a public pedestrian walkway on Pierpoint Lane between the two buildings and a park. Additionally, small-scale retail spaces are included in the designs. Uber is seeking to recruit small and minority-owned businesses for the development team.
Uber bought the 14-acre property for $125 million. Salesforce previously owned the property and planned to build their headquarters there. However, when Salesforce decided to expand their Financial District location instead, they sold the property in three parts to Uber, UCSF, and the Golden State Warriors. Uber was determined to stay in San Francisco, and was reportedly attracted to the Mission Bay location because of its access to local transit, new housing, parks, trails, AT&T Park, and the new Warriors stadium.
Uber now operates in 200 cities and 55 countries, and its growth is not expected to slow any time soon. Uber already has cleared administrative and permitting hurdles, and is ready to break ground. The Mission Bay campus is projected to open at the end of 2017 or early 2018.
